Abstract
Introduction.
Household food security is central to the development of any society. Food insecurity is a major problem in many rural villages of developing countries. The study determined the household food security status of selected villages in Osun state.
Methods
The study design was a cross sectional survey conducted in three villages of Ife East Local Government Area. Households were randomly selected and women of reproductive age group with children in the household were selected by convenience sampling methods. A total of 261 were recruited for the study and quantitative data was collected from respondents using interviewer administered questionnaire adapted on food security and socioeconomic characteristics among others. Data was analysed using SPPSS version 18.
Results.
Of the 261 women 177 (67.8%) were between the age bracket of 25-34 years who were in the majority. Of this 119 (45.6%) were engaged in subsistence farming as means of livelihood in the communities, while 99 (37.9%) were traders on various commodities. About 201 (77.0%) were adjured to be food secure. Household food security increased with Social status Expt(B)= 0.496, 95% CI 0.262 - 0.940) P < 0.05 Conclusion. The study concluded that a sizeable number of the households were food secure probably due to continuous farming activities among the respondents.
