Abstract

Background: Otitis media (OM) is a common childhood disease with significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children. Otitis Media -6 questionnaire (OM-6) is a disease-specific instrument for measuring HRQoL in children with OM. This study sought to validate the Yoruba version of OM-6 questionnaire.
Methods: The OM-6 questionnaire was translated into Yoruba language according to principles of backward–forward translation. The questionnaires were administered to parents of children (< 5years) with OM. The data was analyzed to determine psychometric properties of the Yoruba OM-6.
Results: The study participants were 102 parents. Comparative fit index and the Root mean square error of approximation of Yoruba OM-6 were 0.947 and 0.07 respectively indicating a good model fit. The psychometric properties of the tool were as follows, internal consistency: Cronbach’s alpha = 0.842; reliability: split-half = 0.765; predictive accuracy: Guttman’s lambda = 0.478. The best QoL possible was seen in 62.7% of the respondents.
Conclusion: The Yoruba version of the OM-6 questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument for the evaluation of HRQoL in children with OM
