Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a crucial period of life when adult personality is being formed, self-esteem and resilience are important factors that play a role in having an adaptive, stress-resistant personal quality. The study aimed at determining the level of self-esteem and resilience among adolescents in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state, Nigeria.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was carried out among 400 Adolescents. Self-administered questionnaires were used to elicit information from selected participants using multistage sampling technique. Data was analyzed with IBM SPSS 25 and presented using tables, percentages and mean. Measures of association were done with chi square test and p value set at 0.05.
Results: Majority of the respondents were in their mid-adolescence 264(67.5%), more than half of the respondents 299(58.6%) had normal resilience, while 305(78.1%) had normal self-esteem. There was a significant relationship between self-esteem and resilience with p-value of < 0.001. Factors like parental support and motivation from friends in the school positively affect the self-esteem and resilience of the respondents, though not statistically significant.
Conclusions: A significant relationship was observed between self-esteem and resilience. Education of family, school, and society on the
importance of their support to the resilience and self-esteem of adolescents is recommended.
