Abstract
A 30-year-old woman presented to our medical emergency with one-month history of left-sided loin mass, a day’s history of haematuria and a 6-hour history of inability to pass urine. Abdominal examination revealed a left sided mass which measured 21cm in its widest diameter and a a full bladder. Abdominal
computed tomography revealed a large left cystic kidney mass, and a smaller lesion was noted on the right kidney with associated hydronephrosis. She had uraemic syndrome from acute kidney injury had 5 sessions of haemodialysis. A left radical nephrectomy was performed, and the histology of the kidney
tissue revealed papillary variant of renal cell carcinoma. The symptoms resolved and she was discharged to the nephrology clinic follow up. We present a rare case of bilateral renal cell carcinoma in young woman, who presented with classical features and uraemia. She was managed and discharged to the
medical and surgical out-patient clinics for follow-up. The case suggests the need for a high index of suspicion of renal cell carcinoma in young people for early intervention in order to prevent associated morbidity and mortality.
